Hugh Turvey (HonFRPS, FRSA) is a British artist, photographer, and experimentalist recognized as the pioneer of the Xogram—a specialized medium bridging fine art, diagnostic science, graphic design, and pure photography. Fusing traditional camera-less photogram techniques with high-frequency X-ray radiation, Turvey exposes objects directly onto radiation-sensitive film, manipulating kilovolts (kV), milliamperes (mA), exposure duration, and hand-applied color to reveal the internal density and hidden structures of subjects.
Beyond conventional radiography, his work spans advanced scientific imaging modalities including Computed Tomography (CT), Micro-CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, Mammography, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
“Hugh Turvey, contemporary pioneer of the X-ray art genre over 30 years, has witnessed first-hand the advances of imaging and is uniquely positioned between the aesthetic photographic and radiographic worlds. His work has cultural, art historical and photographic reference points which bridge the divide between science and art.” — Dr. Michael Pritchard HonFRPS, Royal Photographic Society
Turvey is a key practitioner in using applied radiographic art to humanize clinical spaces and reduce anxiety in high-stress medical environments:
Managing projects via Gustoimages Ltd (co-founded with Artemi Kyriacou), Turvey has delivered Motion X-ray TV commercials and creative direction for international brands including Chanel, DITA Eyewear, BÄR Footwear, L’Oréal Paris, Waitrose (Heston Blumenthal range), and Haute Couture designer Iris van Herpen.
In digital publishing, he produced 'X is for X-ray', an interactive educational iPad app and eBook launched at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), featuring synchronized 360-degree visible light and X-ray rotatable imagery.
