The Xogram & Interdisciplinary Practice
Hugh Turvey (HonFRPS, FRSA) is a British artist, photographer, and experimentalist recognized as the pioneer of the Xogram—a specialized medium bridging fine art, diagnostic science, graphic design, and pure photography. Fusing traditional camera-less photogram techniques with high-frequency X-ray radiation, Turvey exposes objects directly onto radiation-sensitive film, manipulating kilovolts (kV), milliamperes (mA), exposure duration, and hand-applied color to reveal the internal density and hidden structures of subjects.
Beyond conventional radiography, his work spans advanced scientific imaging modalities including Computed Tomography (CT), Micro-CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, Mammography, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
“Hugh Turvey, contemporary pioneer of the X-ray art genre over 30 years, has witnessed first-hand the advances of imaging and is uniquely positioned between the aesthetic photographic and radiographic worlds. His work has cultural, art historical and photographic reference points which bridge the divide between science and art.”
— Dr. Michael Pritchard HonFRPS, Royal Photographic Society

- Yeovil District Hospital (Wellcome Trust): 2009 Artist-in-Residence producing 29 permanent hospital artworks and the international touring exhibition inr-i (inner eye).
- Public & Clinical Permanent Collections: Permanent installations at University College Hospital (London), Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, USA), Dorset County Hospital, and medical facilities across Germany and South Africa.
- Canary Wharf Group: Public touring installation 'Hidden Garden' originally commissioned for Crossrail Place Roof Garden, London.
